How many players do you need for pickup soccer?

Updated

The common formats

5v5 needs 10 players and runs on small turf or futsal courts — tight, fast, everyone touches the ball constantly. 7v7 needs 14 and fits a half field, adding real positions without the cardio tax of a full pitch. 11v11 needs 22 and is rare in pickup because gathering that many reliable people is exactly the problem pickup has.

Below those numbers the game changes but doesn’t die: 4v4 with small goals and no keepers is a legitimate, exhausting game at 8 players.

Why a minimum matters more than a maximum

A 5v5 booked for 10 that gets 6 isn’t a smaller version of the same game — it’s a different, worse one, on a field priced for 10. The minimum is the number where the game is worth everyone’s drive.

That’s why every kickr game states its minimum up front and shows a live roster against it. Hit the bar and the game locks in. Miss it and the game auto-cancels with automatic refunds — nobody plays 3v3 on a field meant for ten, and nobody pays for a game that didn’t happen.

Subs and the ideal headcount

If the format allows it, one or two players over the minimum is the sweet spot: rolling subs keep the pace honest for a full hour. Twenty over is a mess; that’s two games’ worth of players and one field.

Game sizes on kickr are capped by the host for exactly that reason — when a game is full, it’s full, and the waitlist promotes automatically if someone drops.
